Dr. Sandeep Nelliat
Scientist-V & Head
Dr. Sandeep Nelliat is Scientist-V and Head of the Engineering Geophysics Department at the National Institute of Rock Mechanics (NIRM). With over 26 years of experience in near-surface geophysics, he specialises in rock-mass characterisation, site evaluation and subsurface investigations for dams, bridges, thermal and nuclear power projects, underground caverns, pipelines, railways, metro systems, slopes and mining projects.
A CUSAT graduate, he joined NIRM as a Research Fellow in 1999 and was appointed Scientist-B in 2002. He earned a Ph.D. in Applied Geophysics from the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad, in 2015. He has published more than 50 technical papers, contributed to over 190 technical investigation reports and completed five Government of India-sponsored S&T projects.
His recent assignments include damage assessment and safety audits for an oil refinery and large-diameter oil and gas pipelines; subsurface rock-mass investigations for the Vadhavan Port Project; capacity-building initiatives for NMDC’s Bailadila Iron Ore Mines; and an IISc Bengaluru pilot project on methane extraction from municipal solid-waste dumps. He has also undertaken professional visits to the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute, Sweden and Denmark.

Dr. B. Butchi Babu
Scientist-IV
Dr. B. Butchi Babu is a Geophysicist, completed his MSc (Tech.,) from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam in 2005. He joined as Scientist-I in 2010 and currently working as Scientist-II in Engineering Geophysics Department. Prior to joining, worked as CSIR-Senior Research Fellow at National Geophysical Research Institute, Hyderabad and has experience in High resolution Aeromagnetic, Electromagnetic and Radiometric data Acquisition, Processing and Interpretation. At NIRM, He contributed to solve many engineering problems in civil, mining and hydroelectric projects by using surface and borehole geophysical techniques. He got experience in high resolution borehole tomography using seismic and GPR techniques. He is the key investigator for the industry sponsored and R&D projects and published more than 15 research papers in International/National journals and conferences. He has visited Belgium, Bhutan and has affiliation to several professional bodies like SEG, SPG, ISRM, ISEG, AEG, IGU, MGMI, ISRMTT etc.
Mr. Y.V. Sivaram
Scientist-II
After obtaining post-diploma (1990) from Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad Mr. Sivaram is associated with all the key activities of this group since 1998. From 1990-98, he was associated with Electronics Instrumentation department and involved in Design, Fabrication and Installation of Seismic/Micro-Seismic Networks. Got patent for Roof Stability Tester developed for Coal mines under S&T project GOI. Has been working for longer than 25 years in Shallow Geophysical investigations He is responsible for acquisition of seismic refraction/tomography (both P & S) survey, GPR profiling/reflection, Resistivity sounding and profiling data. Developed battery operated GPR for coal mines under Collaboration Project with NGI, Norway (INPIC). Also, for upkeep and maintenance of all equipment of the EG dept. Completed over 120 research and industry sponsored projects as a co-investigator, including S&T project of Ministry of Coal and Mines and also contributed more than 30 technical papers as a Co-author

Dr. Goverdhan K
Scientist-II (on deputation to CMPFO)
Dr. Goverdhan Kantepudi has a post-graduate degree in Geophysics Ph.D. from Osmania University (OU), Hyderabad. He started his scientific career at CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (CSIR-NGRI), Hyderabad in 2008 where he worked in seismotectonic studies along east coast of India from Kakinada to Howrah Geotransect.
He has published his work in leading journals, and he has participated around twenty national and international conferences/ seminars/workshops; he has worked in R&D projects of DST, Ministry of Mines and industry sponsored projects as well.
His skills are in 2D High Resolution Seismic Survey (HRSS) for coal/lignite exploration, Gravity, Magnetic, Geophysical logging, Electrical Resistivity Imaging, MASW and Seismic Refraction. He was ONGC merit scholar (2004 to 2006). He is a member of various professional bodies related to geoscience and rock mechanics.

Mr. Sashi Nath Varma
Scientific Assistant-II
Mr Shashi Nath Verma is a Diploma holder in Electronics and Communication Engineering from BTE Delhi and joined NIRM in 2015 as Scientific Assistant-I. He has been working with EGP and has gained experience in various geophysical investigations with GPR, Seismic and electrical resistivity methods. He supports the investigations with upkeep of the instruments, and field operations.
